Rino Van Hooijdonk is renowned as one of the world’s best “gadjo” players in the traditional gypsy jazz style, Rino is also an excellent luthier, who’s guitars capture the very authentic Selmer sound.

This 2018 guitar dubbed model Gusti Malha, is named after the famous manouche guitarist from the heyday of Paris’ La Boîte à Matelots cabaret,  who was a strong musical influence on the young Django Reinhardt.

Visually pleasing with the double cutaway in the style of a German Wapen guitar, but without the diamond shaped soundholes, Rino built a modified internal resonator to purify the balance of tone in this instrument.  It works exceptionally well, and gives a thunderous projection to chords and a focused direct attack to single note lines. A short scale guitar length generally yields a sweeter warmer tone, but lacks the access to the higher frets. The double cutaway makes reaching higher solo positions a non issue, while retaining the quality of tone,  making this instrument is well suited for both lead and rhythm playing.

This instrument has a nicely antiqued spruce top, wavy tinted walnut back and sides, a resonator style tailpiece, and a understated rope style rosette, which adds to the vintage appearance. Guaranteed to turn heads at any jam session or live performance, this guitar is an excellent opportunity to stand out in the sea of oval hole django style instruments, in both visual and auditory respects.
